Shurugwi Teen Mother in Dire Need After DNA Exposes Abuse

Shurugwi – A 17-year-old mentally challenged girl from Zhaugwe village in Shurugwi has been left in a desperate situation after DNA results confirmed that her 83-year-old step-grandfather fathered her twins following repeated sexual abuse.

The teenager, who lost her mother years ago, had been living with her grandmother. But with no steady income, advanced age, and her own frailty, the grandmother is unable to cope with the demands of raising two infants. The young mother herself, mentally incapacitated and barely out of childhood, cannot provide the care her babies urgently need.

The abuse, initially denied by the accused, was uncovered when police in Shurugwi sought the intervention of Global DNA. Scientific results confirmed the elderly man as the biological father, and the matter is currently before the courts.

Yet while justice slowly takes its course, the young victim and her family remain trapped in poverty, stigma, and hopelessness.

“This is not just a criminal case — it is a humanitarian crisis,” said a child rights advocate. “The girl child deserves protection, counselling, and resources to give her twins a chance at life. Without urgent help, they are at risk of being lost in the cracks of society.”

Closure TV News understands that social welfare officers are aware of the case, but community support is also desperately needed. Food supplies, baby clothing, medical care, and educational assistance are among the most pressing needs.

Members of the public, churches, non-governmental organisations, and well-wishers are encouraged to step in and support the girl and her twins, as her grandmother cannot shoulder the burden alone.

This case serves as a painful reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young girls in rural communities and the urgent need for stronger safety nets to protect them.

For now, the fate of this teenager and her twins rests not only on the courts, but on the compassion and intervention of a caring society.
