CHITUNGWIZA – Drama unfolded in St Mary’s, Chitungwiza, on Monday morning after a young man climbed a tower light in an apparent suicide attempt, drawing a massive crowd and prompting a high-stakes rescue by emergency services.

The incident began shortly after 9:00 AM when residents spotted the man dangerously high atop the tower. Word quickly spread, and a large crowd gathered at the base, some shouting in alarm while others broke into prayer.

The Chitungwiza Fire Brigade responded swiftly. A firefighter scaled part of the tower and spent nearly an hour negotiating with the man, urging him to come down safely.

After intense dialogue and coordination, the man was safely brought down with the help of firefighters and residents on the ground. The crowd erupted in cheers as the dramatic standoff ended without injury.

But the relief was short-lived.

As emergency crews attempted to escort the man to a waiting fire truck, a scuffle broke out. The crowd surged forward to get a closer look, and the man resisted being placed inside the vehicle. The situation briefly spiraled before order was restored.

Eyewitnesses described a mix of fear and gratitude.

“We were so scared, we thought he was going to jump. But thank God the firemen were patient,” said one resident.

“This shows how important it is to have our fire brigade ready. They saved a life today,” said another.

“The young man needs help, not just punishment. He is one of us,” a third added.

The man was later taken to St Mary’s Police Station for further assistance. Authorities have not yet released his identity.

The incident has sparked renewed concern over mental health issues in urban communities and highlighted the critical role played by first responders in crisis situations.
